iPic Entertainment has broken from the norms of the industry, agreeing to show Netflix’s original movies at the same time they’re available to the streaming service’s customers.
Most theaters have refused to do this, to protect their exclusive access to new movies.
In order to be eligible for the Oscars, films have to play in New York and Los Angeles for a minimum of one week. This will now put Netflix movies in the conversation for award season.
Boca Raton-based iPic has 105 screens in 14 venues in states including Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, Texas, Washington and Wisconsin.
